The Essence: Shaolin Moto Jacket
Words by Bossman75
“The Essence Clothing was inspired by the legends of art, music, entertainment and fashion. Not only did these artists provide a reflection of their current worlds, but altered and created new ones.”
As cultured as that statement is, it’s not unlike a myriad of brands’ philosophies today, and alone doesn’t do much in the way of building expectations. However when combined with the next one, it fares somewhat better; “The urban undercurrent of the collection was inspired specifically by New York City hip hop culture of the 1990s that shaped the lives of a generation.” Further credibility comes from the fact that all their clothing is custom made for each individual order, using locally sourced materials from the areas in which they were inspired. Until now items have been sold privately, however, a full catalog of products has been promised for Fall 2015.
In what looks to be a fortunate coincidence for The Essence, they have announced pre order of their Shaolin Moto Jacket, following the very public Ghostface and Action Bronson beef.
The Shaolin Swordsmen piece was inspired by motorcycle crews as well as the gangs of New York in the 70’s and early 80’s. The cult classic “The Warriors” represents this era very well. Wu-Tang Clan, old school kung-fu movies, and the Gza’s “Liquid Swords” also played a major role in developing this concept objective was to incorporate elements of multiple cultures to create something quite imaginative and unique. Base of product is highly sought after American branded trucker jacket. Original product is carefully washed out and deconstructed. Custom leather sleeves are then applied along with tackle twill and embroidered patchwork. All put together to offer a custom unique piece.
Authenticity, quality and style are well represented by the Shaolin Moto Jacket and indicative of the music that’s been coming from the Shaolin Slums over the past two decades. In Ghost’s video to Bronson he says “Listen man, you could never fuck with my pen, my nigga. My sword, my blade—whatever you want to call it, I’m too nasty for you. This is why the fuck you look up to me and sound like me.” Ironically this exclusive limited release jacket would probably be something Mr Wonderful would rock. Pre order via The Essence online here before the jacket does a disappearing act.
