Sunnei For Artillerylane
There is something that draws me to designers who have never been formally trained in fashion. It’s the romantic in me that enjoys the democratising nature of creativity and the simple fact that money cannot elevate poor ideas. From Rei Kawakubo to Paul Smith, fashion is awash with designers who were never taught to design – it simply came through instinct. Sunnei’s prelude capsule – ahead of their first season in Spring ’15 – feels natural and has been executed in a manner that would suggest that their designers are more than experienced in their field. Yet, Loris Messina and Simone Rizo – the two Italian’s behind Sunnei – are complete novices with no training in pattern cutting or fashion design. The label has produced an elegant, denim-based offering which has left me intrigued and excited about the brand’s future releases.
