Proper Magazine Issue 17
I’ll level with you: I find most menswear magazines utterly tedious. I love jackets, we all do, but there’s only so much you can say about them. And that’s probably why I like Proper Mag, because when they do talk about jackets, it usually has nothing to do with the actual tech-specifications, and more to do with sub-cultural connotations or a genuinely funny anecdote. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about today, I want to talk about the cover story for their latest issue, which is genuinely one of the best things I have read in a long time. And, thankfully, it has nothing to do with jackets. The long, long interview with Roger Steffens – photographer, counter-culture historian and mate of Bob Marley – isn’t your typical menswear mag interview, but it’s exploration of Rastafarianism, reggae music and documenting the Vietnam War on film is engaging and illuminating – it is worth the cover price alone.
