Patagonia Merino Air™ Baselayer

“Merino Air looks, feels and performs like nothing else on the market – a Patagonia exclusive innovation made with responsibly sourced wool.”

I just spent the past weekend on a Bushcraft and Wilderness Survival course in the Lake District, and one of the things you are told ahead of time is; “Courses will run in all but the most extreme weather conditions. Bad weather makes learning the skills more challenging and harder to master, but you will be rewarded with a higher level of ability and a greater sense of achievement. The unpredictable weather in Britain makes it one of the best training grounds in which to learn bushcraft.”

In other words, appropriate clothing for the surroundings and climate is fundamental. I set off from London wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and upon arrival donned baselayers and waterproofs for the entirety of my camping experience. My ensemble wasn’t too shabby but was certainly more applicable for the highstreet than highlands. My Nike tech fleece and Under Armor baselayers did the job, but I will need better on the next course I attend come October. Designer outdoor clothing is an area in which I am just a novice, so I am grateful for having received the official press release for Patagonia’s new baselayer technology today, which you can read below.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands. (July 23, 2015) – Patagonia today announced the breakthrough Merino Air Baselayer, a first-ever fusion of sustainably sourced wool and cutting-edge technology. Merino Air looks, feels and performs like nothing else on the market – it offers outstanding warmth, more breathability and better fit than conventional merino baselayers, while still maintaining the natural odor-fighting properties of wool. To create Merino Air, Patagonia invested years of advanced R&D to refine three unique steps driven by Patagonia’s dual commitments to technical innovation and protecting the environment:
  • We sourced merino wool directly from the grasslands of Patagonia using regenerative agricultural practices that actually reverse damage to the environment.
  • The wool for each garment is then treated using an innovative air-jet process that creates yarn of greater loft and insulation value than conventionally spun wool.
  • Using a computerized knitting machine, the lofted wool and 100% recycled-polyester yarns are knit directly into a seamless performance fit garment with minimal waste —especially compared to traditional cut-and-sew construction.

The result is a perfect blend of technical product with best in-class performance and sustainable sourcing,” said Jenna Johnson, Senior Director, Technical Outdoor. “Merino Air’s high-loft, efficient wool construction and excellent fit will keep you warm outdoors no matter what you’re up to. It’s the most unique baselayer on the planet, made with responsibly sourced merino wool.”

This fall, Patagonia is also launching a completely redesigned overall baselayer collection –available via direct and wholesale – with a new line structure, exclusive fabrics and a new fit. More information about the baselayer redesign is available on the Patagonia website. Click here for specific details about Merino Air baselayer and watch an introduction to Merino Air below.
