AXE EXHIBITION @ THE CIRCLE London
Words by Bossman75
Not an exhibition of Gene Simmons’ guitars or the American version of Lynx, though the former is likely to have happened somewhere. The Circle London bring to you an exhibition of customized axes, as in the tool that has been used for millennia to shape, split and cut wood; to harvest timber; as a weapon; and as a ceremonial or heraldic symbol. In recent years it’s become fairly commonplace to see decorative axes made available for the urban outdoorsman, most notably the custom 24 carat Gold Axe on hickory handle version from Manready. It’s a project that was first spawned a couple years ago and features a selection of artists from graphic design, tattooing, taxidermy, illustration and fine painting backgrounds. The artists were chosen and given a generic household axe to decorate in whichever form they like. The rules are nonexistent, the possibilities are endless! Artists involved include Mike Boyd (tattooist), BB-Fi (taxidermist), Elfin (jewelry maker and illustrator), Tom J Newell (artist), Ben Oakley (artist), Soft Wax (dub DJ), Batlow (graffiti artist), Chris Guest (oil painter), Scott Patterson (tattooist) and many others. Join the assemblage of Vikings, Lumberjacks, Hipsters and Beardos on opening night by RSVP’ing to Ashley@thecirclelondon.com. The exhibition runs from the 22nd Jan – 16th Feb at The Circle’s gallery in London’s West End.
